A striking early 18th century needlework panel, circa 1700-20

REF: 5141

Boldly designed with stylised foliage executed in silk and wool threads covering the entire canvas, made into a cushion backed with green velvet and woven silk braid, dimensions are seam to seam.

This arresting piece of embroidery is executed in the distinctive strong palette of late 17th and early 18th century needlework. It shares a thematic and stylistic heritage with botanical, particularly foliate, subject matter in North European textile decoration spanning the 16th and 17th centuries. The large leaves are reminiscent of both Flemish large leaf 'feuilles de choux' tapestry and early crewelwork designs. There is also something of the naive whimsey and linear technical constraint found in English bucolic needlework pictures
