A rare 16th century silk velvet appliqué and 'cloth of gold' panel, Italian

The plain crimson silk velvet appliqué designed with arabesques on a 'cloth of gold' ground of plain ribbed silk and linen weave with supplementary 'floating' weft of lamellae (flat golden metal threads) secured by fine binding warp threads, the whole backed with a glazed linen, late 15th century woven linen and metal thread braid to each long edge and an 18th century woven metallic braid to one end.
