A highly impressive and large Elizabeth I carved oak panel, circa 1580
REF: 4255
Designed with the parable of 'The Prodigal Son'. Luke 15: 11-32.
The Prodigal Son was a young man who before leaving home asked his father for his inheritance which he then wasted on riotous living. To the left he is depicted leaving on horseback and to the right, beneath a canopy squandering his money on an excess of food and indulgence.
This panel was originally probably part of an overmantle or fine interior scheme. The design would have been based on contemporary Flemish prints which were widely disseminated and frequently adapted by local craftsmen for such purposes.
