An exceptional Henry VIII oak panel, Welsh, probably Denbighshire, circa 1520-40

REF: 5075

Sold

Centred by a green man-type half-figure, holding the reins of two mythical dragon-type beasts, their tails forming serpent heads, joined to the base of the green man, to each end stands a male with a winged spear pointing directly at the beast

Very possibly originally a fireplace beam from a hunting lodge. See Richard Bebb, 'Welsh Furniture 1250-1950', Vol. I, p. 164 for two comparable fireplace beams. See also the 'Newcourt Cupboard' front, at Cotehele House, Cornwall, illustrated ibid. p. 161, pl. 260a, dated to circa 1515-30, with similarly dressed figures. Further figural comparisons can be drawn with the renowned bedstead of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, circa 1507, ibid., p. 172 & 177
