A good 19th century painted toleware tea canister
REF: 2292
Black, decorated in browns and gold with number '17', having oval retail label 'Parnall & Sons Ltd' to rear, stamped with a letter 'B' to underside.
William Parnall set up his weights and measures manufactory in 1820 at Narrow Wine Street, Bristol and by the 1880s, having expanded into making retail equipment and fittings, his company had become the largest shopfitting supplier in England. The weights and measures side of the business had expanded into a scale works in Fishponds but this later wound down after Avery flourished. Parnall & Sons Ltd appears to have been an agile business moving into aviation manufacturing around the First World War period. It continued and developed both this and shopfitting well into the late 20th century when it was eventually taken over by GEC. It was subsequently sold and sadly went into receivership in 1991 after 170 years of trading.
