A rare pair of Commonwealth/Charles II brass and iron andirons, by Charles Applebee, circa 1650-75

Each with a boss centred disc top, a stepped and waisted stem, the divergent base centred by a pierced 'fleur de lys' stamped with maker's initials 'CA', on pierced bracket feet, (2)
Literature: This design is illustrated R. Butler, 'A Study Collection of Marked Domestic Brass and Other Base Metalware' (2001), p. 21. The maker's stamped mark, is also recorded on other selective brass wares. As of publication date eleven marked candlesticks were known to be extant. Along with two chambersticks, a warming pan, three (or four?) pairs of disc-top andirons and a fire shovel. Brass ribbed mortars are also recorded. The mark, as here, is almost always unevenly struck
