A rare 16th century oak panel carved with a lighthouse, circa 1590
REF: 3537
The cylindrical tower structure having a cupola, a projecting lower crenellated parapet and buttress base.
Lighthouses date back as far as The Pharos of Alexandria, circa 280 BC. The word 'lighthouse' itself does not appear anywhere in the Old Testament. However, there are several references to light and the banishing of darkness. In time the lighthouse became a symbol of Christianity. In the Gospel of John (8:12) Jesus states 'I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'.
