A rare and fine Henry VI / Edward IV carved roof angel, East Anglia, probably Norfolk, circa 1450-1480
REF: 3085
Designed from the waist up, issuing from undulating folds of fabric, outswept wavy curls of hair spreading from beneath a circlet (almost certainly originally centred by a small cross) wearing an alb beneath a cloak or mantle fastened at the collarless neck, the wings typically separately carved fixed high on the shoulders, losses to the hands (which were likely originally holding an object, probably a shield symbolising a message or idea). Appears never to have been painted but with traces of gilding to the circlet.
