A rare mythological carved oak panel, Cumbria, circa 1620-60

Carved with a unicorn, its horn plunged in the scaly neck of a serpent, whose coiled tail wraps around a twelve-petal flower, adjacent to a matching flower, mounted on 18th century linen-covered board and frame, dimensions including frame, 58.5cm high, 47cm wide.
The unicorn is an allegory of Christ, symbolising strength, chastity and purity.
