An early, rare medieval alabaster relief, The Crucifixion, England, Midlands, circa 1380-1400
REF: 4377
Christ in the centre of the panel, surmounted by a 'Pelican in her Piety' (representing self-sacrifice), a Memento Mori at the stepped base of the cross, flanked by the figure of the Virgin Mary, her hands clasped, and St John the Evangelist holding a palm leaf, some daisy pattern remains on the ground at the bottom of the panel, mounted on a velvet covered stand, 42cm high, 26cm wide including stand.
The simple design suggests this is an early example of an alabaster panel, dating from the late 14th century rather than the more elaborate 15th century designs. See Francis Cheetham, 'English Medieval Alabasters' (1984), p. 244, no. 171 for a comparable early crucifixion alabaster dated to the late 14th century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, London, acc. no. A87-1946
